ART190: FINAL ARTISTS

DAVIDE CAMBRIA

Throughout this module my project has become less about the subject and more about the process/materials/scale i do it on as it progressed. Davide Cambria really inspired me to think about the relation between foreground and background and also make the focus of the pieces more about the medium.  Cambria uses a range of brushes as well as palette knives to really get the texture layered up and also give the contemporary feel to the emotive portraits. On top of the painted face Cambria takes the portraits a step further by adding skin toned swatches all over to add depth and give his work a unique vibe. I really like this technique and will relate it to my own work

GUY DENNING

For my final collective series i want to showcase a sort of contemporary style of painting with a more traditional style of sketching. Denning's drawings show how effective line is in building up facial structure. He also uses an eraser in his work to accentuate the light parts and add a personal touch to the pieces. His work mixes an equal balance of realistic sketches of faces with an expressive touch of dark lines cascading down the page - this is something i want to incorporate in my own work, i like how the randomly placed lines add a grittiness and authentic touch to the drawings.

ELLY SMALLWOOD

Smallwood is very much a 'modern painter' who i found on Instagram and has inspired my to try new things such as experimenting with scale and material (i have now painted on a 6ft x 5ft piece of linen which i wouldn't have properly considered doing until i saw her work). Her work is loose and expressive with fleshy tones but emphasises the redness. She maintains a 'messy' look by using charcoal as well and making sure that the portraits/ subjects aren't all done in paint which is again something i really like.
