ROYAL SCOTTISH ACADEMY FOR ART AND ARCHITECTURE VISIT

GEOFF UGLOW

On a trip to Edinburgh i was able to visit this gallery and found an array of artists i really like. I was drawn to this piece by Geoff Uglow straight away because of the scale and way it's painted. I'm really interested in paint and how it can make a subject look by the application of it. This piece, "Quercus Robur" didn't focus on the subject and instead emphasised  the way the paint has been applied and now creates something unique, however it's arrangement is still specific. There is a flow to the piece, it looks like lots of pathways all intersecting which is interesting, there's no beginning or end its all connected and harmonious, timeless even. The monochromatic visual is something i personally really like because from just two colours a whole scale of colours are created and evidently shown in this piece. The thickness of the paint and abstract expressiveness is something i would like to try out more in my own work.

HENRI KONDRACKI

Another artist that i really liked in this exhibition was Henri Kondracki and i particularly liked his small series as shown below. My favourite ones by him are the three tiny ones in the middle of the gallery room. "Wimbledon" in particular was astonishing just just look at and take in, considering how small it is, Kondracki has captured the moment perfectly and somehow maintained an incredible level on detail with the audiences' hands and the tennis players stances as well as the light and shadows on the court. You can't see it on the picture but when you're looking at it first hand up close you can actually see the tennis ball and rackets! this is another artist who is more focused on the paint and how it makes in this case a 'scene' look and it's beautiful to look at.
