ART 246:
January 8th

taking a step back from painting i wanted to do some charcoal studies. i started doing a quick full frontal portrait, emphasising the marks made to give a sketchy look to it on cardboard, A2. I then did another A2 charcoal piece but this time zoomed in on the face so it fills the page and smudge the charcoal more. I wasn't that happy with it so chose to scrape some acrylic over the top to give it some texture and slight colour - i do think this saved it. Keeping the charcoal work going i did some posture studies of me in a hoodie since this was the direction i was heading in before Christmas. As i was doing it i became more interested in marks being made than the figure itself.

This led to a rather intense charcoal study of me facing a wall. As stated above i became less interested in the figure and more on the shadows, surroundings and mark making. the chiaroscuro of the figures shadow on the wall is the most intense part of the composition. I particularly like how amidst the wild marks and bold lines, the calligraphy still stands out and is visible and gives that personal touch to the piece.
