ART 246:
January 12th

After looking at and being inspired by the works of Daniel Segrove, Patrick Graham and Cy Twombly, i wanted to create a large canvas that had a figure in it and text of some kind but also had an interesting loose background and it all worked as a piece. I began making initial sketches of myself from different angles and settled on this one as i liked the way the hoodie fell and folded. My eyes were covered by my hair adding a sense of mysteriousness to the figure. There was still a bit of skin to paint which was good because i do enjoy layering up the different tones.

This is the finished canvas. The background has become somehow more personal to me than the figure because of the use of text/calligraphy which i feel completes the piece. There are symbols, phrases, lyrics and numbers which all mean something to me but to a viewer make no sense so it's a good piece in that respect as they can associate to it in their own way, it's special. I restricted the background to white, blue and pink acrylic with the yellow base coat peeping through. This allows the text to stand out and also the figure in a deep red hoodie. Taking the suggestion of my tutor, i let the paint drip down the hoodie giving it a particular effect. This piece perhaps isn't my strongest one but it's the one that means the most to me Cy Twombly once said he "never really separated painting and literature" and i feel this is proven in my practice as i have taken pieces of writing and incorporated in this piece.
