ART 271:
Assessment Post January 12th 2018

At this point my artist's practice has developed a lot. I am more focused on my subject matter and passionate about what i want to convey to a viewer than i ever was before. Self image has always been a sensitive personal matter to me so doing a project about it has been a bit strange. However, it has surprisingly made me feel better and i'm glad i chose this as my project.

I set out with ideas in my head that i just wanted to do oil paint but as the year went on my ideas obviously changed and i dove more into photography and mixed media. I have learnt that a polished final outcome isn't everything and in fact experimentation and trying out different processes is somewhat more important.

At the start i was interested in tightly worked, detailed observational oil paintings but like i said as i progressed that became less important to me. i became obsessed with mark making and loosely worked paintings that had underlying meanings and connections. Artist Cy Twombly stated he can sit for 3 hours "and then in 15 minutes can do a painting" proving that the psychological side to creating art can be a lot longer than the physical practice itself. this is something i took on board because i was spending hours on a painting that didn't really make me have an emotional response. But, my more recent work has little messages in it that make my identity so i have a more personal connection to them.
