Manami Ito

Japanese artist Manami Ito uses the traditional process of drypoint to create imagery that combines and demonstrates the relationship between art and nature. Pine is a frequent focal point of Ito's creations as she says "working from nature's beauty, people created new beauty." Her work resembles photography which is something she hoped to achieve. Through the technique used she captures the texture pine creates. The pieces to the left are monochromatic  which adds drama and intensity to something so effortless and natural which is something I really like about her work.

Tom Hammick

This is a two part reduction woodcut by Hammick that measures 160 x 120 cms.  What attracted me to this piece was the lower foreground, The way he has made the water reflect stars is so beautiful and adds an element of magic and mystery that compliments the mudane house in the background. It's interesting that stars aren't seen in the sky, only in the water... This piece celebrates an intense romantic connection between a couple; two figures living life on an island as shown from the title 'Violetta and Alfredo'. Hammick has illustrated their isolation from urban life by using a cold colour palette, blues and purples with little bursts of subtle, warm colours.
