ART 200:
ARTIST TALK 8/3/2018:
James Hutchinson - Digital Art

During James' talk on digital art we were introduced to internet artists and hackers and he explained how art pieces can be formed via the internet. We had an in depth look at artist Cory Arcangel who physically modified the nintendo game Super Mario by poking holes in the game cartridge. This removed the foreground of the game leaving behind just the clouds which were in the background. I think this was a successful piece as now it  allows viewers to appreciate the simplicity and beauty within a game which is normally overlooked when being played.

Another artist we looked at was Jodi. a collaborative collective artwork by Belgium artists Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans. They set out to subvert the conventions of the internet by creating a website that creates paintings. Each click creates a new artwork. It is a translation of internet language into a visual form.

After listening to James' talk on digital art i wondered what i had personally seen that could be categorised as digital art and realised that British indi/pop band The 1975 created a live visual performance when they performed at the 2017 Brit Awards. They incorporated the text from their music video and made the majority of the nation think they were being 'hacked' as messages such as "bland", "shallow" and "do people still make music like this" popped up. This was a clever creative strategy  done do make a statement.
