interim assessment - November 6th:

Having an interim assessment was really helpful and it allowed me to see my body of work all together and made me realise what looked 'good' and what didn't work out as well. So far i have taken photographs and made a range of oil studies from them. These paintings have progressed from being initial A4 sketches to being large paintings on hardboard. My initial project started out being about self image and the struggles that come with it e.g lack of confidence, body dysmorphia etc. This idea of 'internal struggle' led me to think how could i depict that feeling in a visual way which is where the empty room studies came about. This was like two separate, different forms going on at the same time which was challenging but enjoyable as i really liked painting the rooms oddly enough. Then came the idea of combining them. Having the tutors give feedback was also really helpful because it made me understand why some things needed to change and i had to ease up a bit and experiment more rather than focus on an end result. At this point a lot of my work is tightly worked oil paintings and some of the pieces i had just messed around with actually worked well. I was told to try some more 'loose' things out, which i intend to do. I had taken a few photographs to support my project a the very start which they liked and i enjoyed taking and editing and hope to use them in the future. I'd like to take photography/mixed media further and definitely branch out from just oil paint and perhaps broaden my project from self struggles to self image and identity.
