JONATHAN YEO

With his distinctive, highly figurative canvases and striking collages, Yeo is one of the most profound portrait artists today. He uses a range of media and techniques to create a diverse body of work that expands the traditional parameters of portraiture. Yeo focuses mainly on portraiture but paints the odd object here and there. More specifically he paints celebrities and recently did a series of model and actress Cara Delevigne which are intriguing as each different piece captures something different about the subject, an emotion is portrayed and so a different response is evoked. Yeo uses oil on canvas mostly but sometimes inkjet on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Ultrasmooth paper for his pieces complete with torn edges and hand finishing to give him this unique distinctive style. He is one of my most favourite artists and has inspired and educated me on use of colour, composition, scale and subject matter.

His Kevin Spacey painting is captivating and the use of pattern in the background creates a unified balance between positive and negative space in the composition. Yeo is able to apply loose expressive paint to the canvas that forms the basic structure of the piece but also keeps a refined, detailed realistic representation of Spacey's face so although it appears expressive and messy when you look closer it is intensely detailed.

His most recent work is currently still a work in progress and it is a series of still life studies of a skull and general anatomy. I am really fascinated by Yeo's versatility and the way he has captured light in his skull painting. The colours he uses and the way he does his backgrounds is something i want to take forward and have it influence my own work,
