ART271:
Assessment Post - May 2018

Coming to the end of the semester i do feel my artist's practice has developed an awful lot. I personally feel like i have found my 'style' and am more focused on my subject matter and passionate about what i want to convey to a viewer.

At the beginning of my project i just wanted to use oil paint but as the year went on my ideas developed and changed and i dove more into photography, and abstraction of the figure. Experimentation is crucial in art practice and without trying things out i wouldn't have my 'pink aesthetic' series which i absolutely love.

Tightly worked, detailed oil paintings were what i was focused on at the start of the year but like i said as i progressed that became less important to me. i became obsessed with mark making and loosely worked paintings that had underlying meanings and connections. Intellectually, Tracey Emin has influenced my practice with the concepts of female body and feminism as well as the raw, harrowing imagery. Visually, Rothko's 1953 'pink on pink' piece was what inspired my own series. Rothko said he was "interested only in expressing basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on" which is the concept i am going for with the visual aesthetics. For me personally, the concept of the canvas being the figure was the key in this semester, it allowed me to work on larger scale pieces, get really involved with the painting process physically by using my hands with the paint and having to be so involved whilst painting.
