Mark Rothko:

Rothko's 1953 painting 'Pink on Pink' is the painting that triggered my idea for a pink painting series because i just adore everything about the piece. The way the paint doesn't reach the edges and it has that disorderly feel to it because at some points the paint goes further to the edge than other places. This to me brings a feeling of liberation, breaking free of a construct, defying expectations all of which are notions i am deeply interested in. The application of paint is clearly visible through Rothko's brush mark making, there is a clear divide on the canvas where the top half has a lot more movement about it and the lower half has a matte flat look to it. But, above all it was the colour that i am enamoured with - that pastel pink with a touch of subtle purple hues in it contrast the vivid mark making and provides a gentle calming dreamlike scene that i can just stare at for hours.
