Shaun Project Space Crit - March 7th:

Sophie - Anne Mitcheson presented small scale sculptures resembling egg like forms, some forms were cracked/fractured, some contained natural things like flowers and one egg had two little ducks in. Positioned on the floor to maintain the naturalistic feeling eg flowers growing, group agreed it wouldn’t feel right having them on a plinth however a suggestion to use turf was considered a good experiment to do. Sophie said these were experimental pieces with different materials and ideas that coincide with the materials but wanted to express the feeling of containing/ preserving nature which was shown specifically through the wool woven egg with flowers inside breaking through the gaps. There wasn’t a lot of colour used she kept the colours natural and muted.

Jessica Watson presented a series of continuous line portraits, each drawing was done differently through the use of materials. A favourite of mine was the marker on white background with the pink glow behind because it gave a 3D aspect to the drawing and made it really stand out. There was debate as to whether the same face was used in all the studies or if if was a different face. This also led to discuss whether the subject was male or female and though it doesn’t really matter the majority went with male because of the the square jaw, bald head and long stern features like the nose however the artist later informed us the face wasn't based off anyone, it was just a formulation of what was in her head at the time. The portraits i feel are distorted, an abstraction and exaggeration of the norm. I think the four she had on the wall were the same figure just a different position so it made the illusion it could be different figures but it's really dependent on the viewers own interpretation. The drawings were all A3.

The response from my painting was good, everyone was a bit confused about the pink ‘background’ and couldn’t decide if it was a background or if it was more important than that . I didn’t really have a reason behind the painting so it was interesting to see how people interpreted it themselves, a lot of people said it was a sad painting because of the figure hiding her face and it created a mysterious element to it. People liked the brush strokes and how the horizontal quick marks were made as it made it seem 'glitchy'. For me, I wanted the piece to be quite dreamlike and visualise internalised thoughts - I love the colour pink, specifically that pastel / blush colour so I purposely chose that to immerse the figure in to represent me to an extent. I knew i wanted to do a large scale painting (6ft x 4ft) and i made the conscious decision to to it on unstretched canvas which got  a positive response as it made the painting appear more raw and hands on as opposed to being on a stretched clean cut canvas.
