Shaun Project Space Crit - November 22nd:

I had my crit this week in the Shaun Project Space. It was good to see my paintings up on a blank wall. I chose to use three paintings and exhibit them as a mini series. Because the paintings are so stripped back and 'basic' in terms of composition and imagery i think it meant people were thinking about what it could mean more especially with the empty room. A lot of the response was that they appeared gloomy and dejected  but that i should broaden and experiment with the composition more. I found this useful because the paintings are all quite similar so trying new ideas and options out would be a good idea. Everyone said they appreciated the wall more than they would normally because of the colours on it and some felt that was more interesting than the figure which i can understand and kind of agree with.

The works of Davika Kergon who presented some photography/mixed media pieces , Connor Lydon who had a bold monochromatic piece with touches of striking red in the form of an illustrative portrait. Brett Dickson who did an emotive large painting on canvas with lots of symbols, connotations and imagery in it as well as an interesting palette. Areti Chatzipavlou had a series of 3D model/ sculptures on plinths and an acrylic painting on board. Tamas Csanak made some custom shoes and used a mannequin to model them which was quirky. Charlotte Stewart had made a few experimental paintings focusing on different ways to get certain effects and finishes. This group critique has given me help with ideas such as experimentation and process are just as important as a final outcome and i want to try some mixed media work.
